Walmart Stores and its Walmart Foundation Giving $10 Million Over Five Years to Assist America's Veterans

Veteran's Day 2010

Walmart Stores, Inc. and its Walmart Foundation are investing $10 million over the next five years to assist U.S. veterans, with a special focus on supporting job readiness and training programs.

The $10 million, five-year financial commitment will support nonprofit groups that assist U.S. veterans in their pursuit of higher education and enable our veterans to more easily reintegrate into civilian life, says Gary Profit, Walmart's senior director of military recruitment.

"According to the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 250,000 veterans were unemployed as of March 2010," Profit said today. "As one of the nation’s largest private employers of veterans, Walmart made this $10 million commitment to address the alarming unemployment situation facing our veterans and create even more job opportunities for those who so bravely protected our country," he added.

"We strive to support their heroism in a variety of ways and continue to work to understand and meet their specific needs. We know we can make a great difference in addressing some of their biggest challenges, especially to those returning home from service in need of jobs, support and services to assist them in re-acclimating to life back at home."

As part of its announcement today Walmart outlined various initiatives it's currently undertaking in support of American veterans. According to Profit, those initiatives include:

• Actively recruiting former military personnel
• Helping former active-duty military employees transition into civilian jobs
• Assisting veterans as they pursue their educational goals
• Providing access to behavioral health and family services for veterans and their families

Below are examples of specific veteran-support initiatives Profit says Walmart has already funded:

Veterans’ Education
The Walmart Foundation is committed to providing support to our nation’s veterans as they pursue their educational goals. Recent grants included in these efforts are:

• American Council on Education (ACE) – The Walmart Foundation awarded ACE a $2.5 million grant to support successful veterans education programs across the country. Through a competitive grant process, ACE awarded 20 Success for Veterans grants of $100,000 to institutions across the U.S operating model programs advancing access and success in higher education for veterans and their families.

• Give an Hour – The Walmart Foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to Give an Hour - the grant will mobilize the Give an Hour provider network in various communities to ensure that veterans pursuing higher-education opportunities have access to the professional mental health services that Give an Hour provides.

Military Family and Transitional Support
The Walmart Foundation recognizes that those who are returning home active duty as well as their family members face significant challenges as they adjust to life back at home. The following grants are a few examples of our ongoing efforts to serve the needs of military families and returning veterans:

• Mission Serve: ServiceNation – As part its $10 million commitment to veterans, Walmart donated $300,000 to ServiceNation, a national organization aimed at increasing service opportunities and elevating service as a core ideal in American society. This partnership helped to organization 25 Mission Serve projects nationwide for Veterans Day 2010. Mission Serve is the civilian-military initiative of the ServiceNation coalition and is aimed to connect the civilian and military communities.

• Veterans Green Jobs – Through its ongoing partnership, Walmart Foundation has awarded a total of $1.25 million toVeterans Green Jobs to support the development of four training sites, which will help veterans develop green job training skills. The training sites – which will be built in Washington, Colorado, New Mexico and Louisiana – will assist returning military personnel facing the challenging task of reintegrating into civilian life.

• Sesame Workshop – Through donations totaling $1.97 million, the Walmart Foundation has partnered with Sesame Workshop, the organization behind Sesame Street, to develop bilingual outreach kits for young children of the U.S. Armed Services, National Guard and Reserves. The kits help military children and families manage challenges, including possible anxiety caused by a parent’s deployment or reunion after a period of absence or frequent relocation. Our most recent funding supports an initiative that will provide a comprehensive set of multimedia resources that will be made available to children coping with the death of a parent.

• National Center on Family Homelessness – The Walmart Foundation has donated more than $1 million to the National Center on Family Homelessness (NCFH). This funding has supported their Community Circles of Support for Veterans’ Families initiative, which works to improve high-quality emotional health and family support services for veterans and their families through integrated community support programming. As a result of this support, the organization released Engaging Veterans and Families to Enhance Service Delivery: A Tool Kit for Community-Based Organizations to discuss the impact of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and offers useful tools for veteran outreach, including understanding the unique experiences of female veterans, and maximizing veteran participation in programs and services.

Walmart founder Sam Walton is a veteran of World War II, where he served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps from 1942-1945. Former President George H. W. Bush presented him with the Medal of Freedom on March 17, 1992, just a few weeks before Walton died.

In his autobiography, "Sam Walton: Made in America," Walton credits his military service as being key to his future career as an entrepreneur and retailer.

Sam Walton, who became an Eagle Scout at age 13, went to high school at Hickman High in Columbia, Missouri and remained in Columbia to attend college, graduating from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1940 with an economics degree, started his career in retail at J.C. Penny in Iowa right after getting out of the Army in 1945.

A short time later Walton left J.C. Penney and opened his own variety store in Newport, Arkansas, which he operated for a few years.

In 1951 he and his wife Helen opened Walton’s Five and Dime in Bentonville, Arkansas, which was the forerunner to Walmart.

Walton opened his first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas in July 1962.

A mere 48-years later Walmart Stores, Inc. not only is the number one global retailer, with annual sales approaching $500 billion, it's also ranked by Forbes as the biggest corporation in the world based on annual revenue. It's 2009 annual sales of $408,214 billion dwarfs the second and third-largest corporations, Royal Dutch Shell ($285,129) and Exxon Mobil ($284,650), on Forbes' 2010 biggest global companies list.

The stark reality in the U.S. today is that only one half of one percent of all Americans serve in today's all-volunteer military, according to the Pentagon. To take that a step further, it means fewer than one percent of all us have been fighting America's two wars - Afghanistan, which is nearly a decade old, and Iraq, which although it's winding down will soon hit year number nine.

The U.S. government, American business, and all of us collectively and individually owe that one percent and all the living veterans who came before them all we can and then some, particularly right now in assisting those veterans returning from Iraq and those who will soon hopefully be returning from Afghanistan.

Walmart's five-year commitment to America's veterans this Veteran's Day is an excellent start. We encourage other food and grocery retailing chains that aren't already doing so, to do what they can, (and then do a little more) to assist veterans, including offering them jobs and promotions, helping to fund their training and advanced education, and offering other types of assistance. They are one of the best investments a business can make.

A Bird in the Hand: Buy-A-Turkey, Give-A-Turkey on Fresh & Easy's Dime For Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, the most food and family-focused of all American holidays, is a mere two weeks away. And although it's redundant for us to tell you - because we all know it without being told: Times are tough.

Something else we all know is that the times are currently tougher for some of us than they are for others.

With this information and the spirit of Thanksgiving in mind, if you shop at one of the 155 Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores in California, Nevada and Arizona, and if times aren't as tough for you as they might be for others, here's an idea we're calling: 'Buy A Turkey, Give A Turkey on Fresh & Easy's Dime for Thanksgiving.' Feel free to join in, either in practice or spirit.

'Buy A Turkey, Give A Turkey on Fresh & Easy's Dime for Thanksgiving': How it works in 4 Easy Steps

Numbers 1 and 2 provide background information you will need. Number 3 is the action step. Number 4 is the reward for your efforts:

Step 1. Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market currently has Jennie-O Turkey Store brand whole frozen turkeys on sale for 37 cents a pound, which is a very good promotional price. In fact, based on the current market, we suspect it's a loss-leader item (or very close to it) for the grocery chain, which means Fresh & Easy is offering the birds for its cost or close to it. There's a limit of two whole turkeys per-customer. View the ad item here in Fresh & Easy's November 10-16, 2010 weekly advertising circular.

Step 2. Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market also has a store coupon good for $5-off purchases of $20 or more currently available. The coupon is good all month; from November 1-30, 2010. You can obtain/download the $5 off coupon here.

'Buy A Turkey, Give A Turkey on Fresh & Easy's Dime for Thanksgiving': Time to Shop

Step 3. Armed with the information above, and your $5-off coupon, buy two frozen Jennie-O turkeys at a Fresh & Easy store for 37 cents a pound. The birds range in size from 10 -to- 22 pounds each.

Bird One: Buy whatever size turkey you want for yourself. Bird Two: Then make the second turkey you buy a 10-14 pounder. A 13 pound Jennie O Turkey will run $4.81.

Free Bird: The $5-off $20 Fresh & Easy store coupon will pay for your second bird, which means you can give it to someone in need or donate it to your local food pantry or food bank.

Even if you buy a 22 pound bird for yourself and a 13 pound bird to donate (total cost of $12.95), it won't come to the full $20. You'll still have $7.05 to spent on whatever you want to reach a $20 total. But the 10-14 pound Jennie O frozen turkey you buy to donate won't cost you a dime. In fact, it will be on Fresh & Easy's dime that your local food pantry or food bank gets a whole turkey to give to someone in the community who might not have had one this Thansgiving without your effort, along with Fresh & Easy's hot deal and $5-off coupon.

Step 4. The last step is the most fun. give the turkey to a friend, neighbor or stranger in need. Or donate the free bird to your local food pantry or food bank, which are in need of holiday turkeys for Thanksgiving.

Bullseye: Target Goes From Zero-to-Eighty-Seven 'P-Fresh' Food Markets in Southern California in Under Two Years

Southern California Market Region Report

[Editor's Note: Fresh & Easy Buzz published Part 1 of our Target "P-Fresh" research report on September 26, 2010 - While Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Postponed, Target Opened 42 'P-Fresh' Fresh Food and Grocery Markets in Northern California - focusing on Northern California. Part 2 below focuses on the Southern California region.]

Can you guess the name of the retailer that's opened more new food and grocery "markets" in Southern California over the last 18 months than any of its competitors, and has managed to do so without opening more than a handful of actual new stores?

The answer: Target Corp.

Over the last 18 months, Minneapolis, Minnesota-based discount retailer Target has opened 87 of its 10,000-12,000 square-foot "P-Fresh" store-within-a-store fresh food and grocery markets inside 87 of its discount format stores throughout Southern California.

Target currently has 141 discount format stores in Southern California, which means, if it chooses, the retailer still has 54 existing units available to add additional "P-Fresh" fresh food and grocery markets in.

There are seven SuperTarget combination food-grocery-general merchandise stores in Southern California. The stores are similar to a Walmart supercenter in terms of product selection.

Target operates 246 stores in California and 1,752 stores in the U.S. The majority are discount format units.
Target plans on installing "P-Fresh" markets (pictured above) in a number of those remaining 53 Southern California discount format stores by the end of 2011, along with including the 10,000-12,000 square-foot fresh food and grocery markets in most if not all of the new discount format stores it opens in the region.

For example, on October 10, Target opened 10 new discount stores nationally. Two of the 10 new stores are located in Southern California - in Azuza and Simi Valley. Both include "P-Fresh" markets. [See - October 11, 2010: Target Hits Once-in-Century Date Bulls Eye: Opens Ten New Stores On Sunday 10-10-2010.]

Target is also developing one of its new-prototype, smaller-format stores in the 7+Fig mall in downtown Los Angeles.

The urban Target store, which will be about 90,000- 100,000 square-feet, will have a heavy emphasis on food, groceries and household basics, according to John Griffith, Target's executive vice president of property development. The store will be located in a combined space formerly occupied by Macy's and Bullock's department stores.

Target's discount format stores average about 130,000 square-feet. It's combination food and general merchandise SuperTarget stores are in the 175,000 square-foot range.

The downtown Los Angeles store is the second urban unit announced by Target. The first will be in Seattle, Washington. Both stores are set to open in 2012, according to Griffith.

In late September, 2010, as we reported in this story - September 24, 2010 - Target to Have 'P-fresh' Fresh Food & Grocery Markets in 850 Stores By 2011 End; First Smaller Urban Store Set For Seattle in 2012 Target Corp. said it plans to have "P-Fresh" fresh food and grocery markets in 850, more than half, of its U.S. discount format stores by the end of 2011.

As a point of comparison, Target's 88 "P-Fresh" store-within-a-store units, which it's opened over the last 18 months, gives it nearly the same amount of fresh food and grocery "units" in Southern California as Tesco has with its current 92 stand-alone Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores.

Tesco has opened the 93 Southern California Fresh & Easy units over a three-year period, starting with the first batch of stores it opened in the region in November 2007. There are 92 Fresh & Easy stores in Southern California. A store in Moreno Valley was closed this month. The Fresh & Easy markets average about 10,000 square-feet, very similar in size to Target's "P-Fresh" in-store markets.

Going beyond the comparison between Target and Tesco's Fresh & Easy to the larger Southern California region itself, Target Corp., with its 88 "P-Fresh" in-store markets, and Tesco, with its 92 small-format Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores, have combined added the equivalent of 180 new 10,000 square-foot grocery stores to the region since late 2007. That's a whole lot of new grocery stores over a three year period, even for vast Southern California.

Further, the additional food and grocery retailing space added by Target and Tesco's Fresh & Easy is in addition to all of the new stores opened by the region's other food retailers - Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, Costco, Trader Joe's, Stater Bros., Albertsons, Whole Foods Market, Sprouts Farmers Market and numerous others - over the last three years.

To put it mildly, growing and intense hyper-competition is on the food and grocery retailing menu in Southern California. And Target Corp., which less than two years ago had only a scant few stores selling fresh food and groceries in the region, is on its way to becoming a player in Southern California.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market's '5800 Third Street' Northern California 'Flagship' Store in San Francisco is Taking Shape

Northern California Market Region Special Report

The future Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market store at 5800 Third Street (at Carroll Avenue), located in the new '5800 Third Street' residential development in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood, is taking shape in anticipation of its early 2011 opening. Based on our current information, the store could open as early as February 2011, but no later than April of next year.

As you can see in the photograph at top, the outside signs are now on the store, which is the ground floor retail anchor for what will be a 340-unit residential complex when its fully completed. Up to 1,000 residents will eventually call the development home, according to Rick Holliday, the developer.

The first phase of 5800 Third Street, 137 residential units, has been completed. Oakland, California-based Developer Holliday Development says it's currently offering the 137 homes for sale. A few of the units have already been purchased.

Goldman Sachs' Urban Investment Group is the equity partner in the development. Citi Community Capital is the the construction lender for 5800 Third Street.

One bedroom/one bath units are listed starting at $339,000, with two-bedrooms with two-baths starting at $383,000. Three-bedroom flats with two-baths start at $479,000 and three bedroom/three-bath town homes are listed at $539,000. A percentage of the units are available to low-income residents of the neighborhood at significantly reduced prices.

In a series of stories starting in April of this year, we reported that Tesco would announce this summer its plans to open its first batch of Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores in Northern California in early 2011.

See our story chronology below:

>September 22, 2010: Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Plans to Open Two Additional Stores in Northern California in Early 2011

The 5800 Third Street store in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood is key to Tesco's Northern California launch because it will serve as a "flagship" store of sorts for Fresh & Easy in Northern California.

As we mentioned in a number of the stories linked above, Tesco's Fresh & Easy has started to do interior and exterior work to a number of its first 11 stores in Northern California, which have a February-April 2011 opening time-frame.

Eight of those 11 stores (see addresses here) are going into existing buildings that Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood market is renovating. The two exceptions are the 5800 Third Street unit, which as the retail anchor of the residential housing project is a build-from-the-ground-up store, and the unit in Pacifica, which is new construction, has been completed for over two years.

The 5800 Third Street (at Carrol Avenue) development in San Francisco's Bayview neighborhood is part of a larger public-private "new village" development in the area, Carroll Station, that's been in the works for over 10 years.

Carroll Station is named after the island platform light rail station of the the San Francisco Municipal Railway's Muni Metro system, which is located in the median of Third Street at Carroll Avenue in the Bayview district.

The new neighborhood community includes the 5800 Third Street residential development, which will eventually house 1,000 residents when it's built out , along with another similar development called Armstrong Place, which is a town home and senior housing complex.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market purchased the 15,000 feet of commercial space at 5800 Third Street for its store.

In addition to the Fresh & Easy fresh food and grocery market the Carroll Station community so far is set to include a restaurant to be operated by Martin and Antonio Castillo, owners of the popular restaurant 'Limon,' which is located in the city's Mission district, along with a new cafe owned by the Delancey Street Foundation, which operates a 300,000 square-foot business training complex at Carroll Station.

The cafe will be called Crossroads Cafe and modeled after a similar cafe of the same name the foundation owns in San Francisco's South Beach neighborhood.

Delancey Street, which was founded by Mimi Silber in San Francisco and is considered an international model, is a residential rehabilitation and training center for ex-offenders, including those with substance abuse addictions. It now has facilities in Los Angeles, New Mexico, North Carolina and New York, along with the San Francisco flagship foundation.

We've said going as far back as early 2008, when Tesco first announced its plans to open a store in the 5800 Third Street at Carroll Avenue development, that it's our analysis the Carroll Station location will be on of Tesco's top five stores in terms of average weekly sales, and likely it's number one grossing store in Northern California, out of the over 50 sites in the region we've identified so far. (See our Northern California Fresh & Easy Store List.)

Look for the opening of the 5800 Third Street store to be used by Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market as its official and formal kick off for its Northern California launch in early 2011.

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Queuing Up Three Additional Stores in Northern California For Early-to-Mid 2011 Openings

Breaking Buzz
Northern California Market Region Special Report

Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is queuing three more stores in Northern California for an early-to-mid 2011 opening, Fresh & Easy Buzz has learned.

The three stores and their locations are:

>Pleasanton - Santa Rita Road & Rosewood Drive
>Hayward - Mission Boulevard & Rousseau Street
>San Jose - Saratoga Avenue & Payne Avenue

All three of the stores are in the San Francisco Bay Area. Pleasanton and Hayward are in the East Bay Area; San Jose is in the South Bay Area.

Tesco has had the Hayward location since 2007 and the Pleasanton store site since late 2008-early-2009. The San Jose unit was obtained this year.

As we've previously reported, Tesco's Fresh & Easy currently has 11 units in the queue to be opened in Northern California in the first quarter of 2011.

The 11 stores are:

>San Francisco - Third Street & Carroll Avenue
>San Jose - Bird Avenue & Minnesota Avenue
>Danville - Diablo Boulevard & Highway 680
>Pacifica - Cabrillo Highway & Linda Mar Boulevard
>Vacaville - Elmira Road & Nut Tree Road
>Modesto - Oakdale Road & Lancey Drive
>Walnut Creek - Ygnacio Valley Road & San Carlos Drive
>Concord - Clayton Road & Ygnacio Valley Road
>Napa - Jefferson Street & Imola Avenue
>San Francisco - 32nd Avenue and Clement Street
>Sunnyvale - Tasman Drive and Fair Oaks Avenue

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has publicly announced the first eight of the 11 stores listed above, saying in August, 2010 that it would be opening the units in Northern California in early 2011. [See - August 21, 2010: April 2010 Prediction Correct: February 2011 Target to Open First Eight Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Stores in Northern California and August 19, 2010: Tesco Will Open its First Eight Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Stores in Northern California in 'Early 2011.']

Our reporting on the additional three stores (out of the 11) is based on information we obtained from multiple sources.

The three units - Napa, San Francisco (32nd & Clement) and Sunnyvale - are, like the other eight, currently set by Tesco's Fresh & Easy to be opened before the end of the first quarter of 2011, according to our sources and research. We stress that the time-frame is based on our current information. Tesco is known for delaying openings, particularly in Northern California, where the first batch of the 37 stores announced in January 2008 was originally set to be opened in early 2009.

We've reported on and written about all three of the latest stores focused on in this piece - Pleasanton (Santa Rita Road & Rosewood Drive), Hayward (Mission Boulevard & Rousseau Street) and San Jose (Saratoga & Payne), in Fresh & Easy Buzz.

The Hayward store at Mission Boulevard & Rousseau Street is one of the original 37 Fresh & Easy units - 19 in the Sacramento Metro region and 18 in the San Francisco Bay Area - that Tesco announced in early 2008. Its one of two stores Tesco announced at the time for Hayward. [See our Northern California Fresh & Easy Store List. Also: January 30, 2008: Fresh & Easy Goes On the Record: Announces 18 Northern California Stores in the Bay Area.]

We first reported on the future Pleasanton unit at Santa Rita Drive & Rosewood Drive, in the Rose Pavilion Shopping Center, in a January 24, 2008 piece: Fresh & Easy Locking-Up Leases For Northern California Invasion.

Additionally, on April 19, 2009 we reported on and detailed Tesco's plans to open a Fresh & Easy market at the location in Pleasanton in this story: Tesco's Fresh & Easy Signs Lease For New Store in Pleasanton, CA; We Reported 15 Months Ago the SF Bay Area City Was in its Strategic Sites.

The Saratoga Avenue & Payne Avenue (1328 Saratoga Avenue) future Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market unit in San Jose is one of Tesco's most recently obtained Northern California Fresh and Easy store locations, as we reported in this September 22, 2010 piece: Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Planning A New, Third Store in San Jose, California.

Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is gearing up to make the first half of 2011 a California-focused new store-opening period.

For example, in addition to launching into Northern California early next year as we've detailed, Tesco's Fresh & Easy is opening 10 new stores in Southern California in the first quarter of 2011, as we first reported in mid-October 2010. [See our story from yesterday - November 4, 2010: Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Confirms Our October Reports On 10 New Stores Opening in Early 2011.

Additionally, the fresh food and grocery chain continues to lock up future Fresh & easy store sites in the Northern California region, including the six locations we've reported on from May-November of this year, which are featured in the stories linked below:

Meanwhile, Tesco has closed its 13 under-performing Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market stores - six each in Metro Los Vegas, Nevada and in Metro Phoenix, Arizona; and one in Southern California - it announced it was shuttering on October 5, 2010. [See 13 Closing Fresh & Easy Stores List for the addresses of the 13 closed units.]

There are now 155 Fresh & Easy stores located in California (Southern California and the Central Valley), Metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, and Metro Las Vegas, Nevada. [Click here to see a breakdown by number of stores for each of the market regions.]

Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Confirms Our October Reports On 10 New Stores Opening in Early 2011

Southern California Market Region Report: New Stores

On October 17, Fresh & Easy Buzz broke the news that Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market plans to open 10 new stores in Southern California beginning in early January 2011. [See - October 17, 2010: No Additional New Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Stores Set to Open This Year; Ten New Units Planned For January 2011.]

We followed our October 17 report up a week later, naming the 10 cities in Southern California where the 10 new Fresh & Easy stores will be located, and reporting the 10 stores are set to open in the January-February 2011 time period. [See - October 25, 2010: Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market to Open 10 New Stores in 10 Southern California Cities in January-February 2011.]

As we correctly reported on October 27, the 10 Southern California cities are: Lake Forest, Camarillo, El Cajon, Ventura, San Dimas, Walnut Park, Oceanside, Long Beach, Costa Mesa and San Diego.

Today, Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market confirmed our reports, announcing the addresses of the 10 stores and the dates when it plans to open the locations.

Below are the store addresses and opening dates:

January 12
• 2nd Street & Madison Avenue - El Cajon

February 3
• Arneill Road & Las Posas Road - Camarillo
• Bonita Avenue & San Dimas Canyon Road - San Dimas

February 9
• El Toro Road & Trabuco Road - Lake Forest
• Newport Boulevard & Harbor Boulevard - Costa Mesa
• Camino Del Norte & Dove Canyon Road - San Diego

February 16
• Oceanside Boulevard & Vine Street - Oceanside
• Alameda Street & Florence Avenue - Walnut Park
• Seaward Avenue & Thompson Boulevard - Ventura

March 30
• Atlantic Avenue & 33rd Street - Long Beach

As you can see above, one store, the unit in Long Beach, has a March 30, 2011 opening date. As we always note in such stories in Fresh & Easy Buzz, new store opening dates are fluid and dynamic at Tesco's Fresh & Easy. The other nine stores are set to open within the January-February 23 time-frame however.

In our October 17, 2010 story we also reported that Tesco's Fresh & Easy had decided not to open any additional new stores for the remainder of 2010. The grocer's announcement today about the early 2011 store openings confirms our report. It wouldn't announce 2011 store openings if it was planning any additional 2010 new store openings.

The last new stores Tesco's Fresh & Easy opened were in September of this year. [See - July 14, 2010: Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Confirms Our June 25 Report it Will Open Nine New Stores in September 2010.]

Tesco currently has 155 Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market fresh food and grocery stores in California, Metropolitan Las Vegas, Nevada and Metro Phoenix, Arizona.

The 155-store number is down from 168 units, the result of the closing by Tesco of 13 poor-performing Fresh & Easy Markets. [See - November 2, 2010: Closure of 13 Stores Brings Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market's Store-Count to 155 Units. There's a breakdown of the 155 stores by market region in the November 2 linked story.]

Once the 10 new stores are opened by the end of the first quarter of 2011, Tesco will have 102 Fresh & Easy markets in Southern California.

In addition to the planned first quarter 2011 openings of the 10 new stores detailed above, Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood market plans also to open its first batch of stores, 11 thus far based on our reporting, in the first quarter of next year. Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Plans New Store in Northern Central Valley, California City of Ceres

Northern California Market Region Special Report

Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is planning to open an additional store in Northern California's Northern Central/San Joaquin Valley, Fresh & Easy Buzz has learned.

The planned new Fresh & Easy unit will be at 1342 East Hatch Road in Ceres, California, which is a city of 43,000, located next door to Modesto, which has a population of 205,000. Modesto and Ceres are in Stanislaus County.

The store will be Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Store Number 1360.

The East Hatch Road future Fresh & Easy market is located near another future Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market store site, which is at Crows Landing Road near Whitmore Avenue. The location is in Ceres but most local residents consider it as part of South Modesto. The two cities literally border each other in the area. [See - March 31, 2009:Despite Having Postponed its Northern California Launch Indefinitely; Tesco's Fresh & Easy Planning Third Store in Modesto, California.]

The 1342 East Hatch Road future Fresh & Easy store location is located at the entrance to the Ceres Plaza Shopping Center and next to an existing Home Depot big box store. It's off Highway 99, which is the major freeway connecting the Central Valley.

In terms of competing grocers, there's a Raley's supermarket nearby, which is a branch of the Sacramento, California-based 133-store chain. A Kmart discount store, which sells a limited assortment of food and grocery items but not fresh foods like meats and produce, is also nearby.

Walmart is planning to build a new food-grocery-general merchandise supercenter in Ceres, not far from the Crows Landing Road/Whitmore and East Hatch Road future Fresh & Easy store locations.

Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market recently applied to the California Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) Department for an off sale beer and wine license (license number 472764) for the 1342 East Hatch Road location. The license application is a transfer sale from an existing convenience store retailer, Oakdale Chevron & Mini Mart, 260 North Yosemite Avenue, Oakdale, California, according to the California ABC.

We've also verified the Ceres location through additional sources.

Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market doesn't confirm new store locations until it's ready to make a formal annoouncement.

The new Hatch Road site makes for four potential Fresh & Easy markets thus far that Tesco could open in the Modesto-Ceres area. We say potential because obtaining the sites doesn't mean for sure a store will eventually open at the given location, although one most likely will.

One of those stores, the unit at Oakdale Road and Lancey Drive in Modesto, is part of the first batch of 11 Fresh & easy stores Tesco plans to open in early 2011. [See - September 22, 2010: Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Plans to Open Two Additional Stores in Northern California in Early 2011.]

See the three linked stories below for details about the other Modesto and Ceres store locations:

>November 6, 2008: Upcoming New Markets News: Tesco Will Open A Second Fresh & Easy Store in Modesto, California

Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market continues to look for future store sites in the Northern Central Valley, along with elsewhere in the Northern California region, as it prepares to open its first batch of stores early next year.

For example, so far this year we've reported on the following new Northern California Fresh & Easy store locations the retailer has obtained:

>November 1, 2010: Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Planning to Build its First Store in Northern California City of Brentwood

>October 26, 2010: Going Semi-Rural: Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Buys Property For New Store in Northern California Town of Clear Lake

>August 25, 2010: Going Rural: New Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market Store Planned for Sutter Creek in Northern California

>May 29, 2010: Going Rural: Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market to Build First Store in Los Banos, California

In terms of opening new stores, nearly all of Tesco Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market's focus in the first half 2011 will be on California - south, north and in-between.

We see few if any new Fresh & Easy markets being opened in Metropolitan Las Vegas, Nevada during the first-half of next year, based on the information we currently have.

Additionally, based on current information, look for no more than a couple new Fresh & Easy stores to open in Arizona in the first-half of 2011.
