Texas-based fresh-prepared foods retailer My Fit Foods has opened its first two stores in California, at 1005 Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach and 2543-G Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance.

The Hermosa Beach store (pictured at top) opened Monday, February 27. The unit in Torrance, located right next to a Trader Joe's grocery market (three photos below), opened today.

Grand opening events for both stores were held today.

As we've previously reported, My Fit Foods plans to open additional stores in California this year and beyond.

The next store set to open is at Wilshire and Barrington (11701 Wilshire Boulevard #7) in Santa Monica, as noted in the brochure pictured above, which was available today at the Hermosa Beach store. That store is slated to open in a couple months.

The stores offer fresh, pre-packaged refrigerated meals, side-dishes, snacks and deserts in buildings ranging from about 1,100-to-1,800 square-feet.

In Southern California, the fresh-prepared food iterms, like the pre-packaged Tenderloin Roasted Vegetable Dinner below, are made in a kitchen inside the My Fit Foods store in Hermosa Beach, which is larger than the unit in Torrance.

The fresh-prepared foods are transported from the Hermosa Beach unit to the Torrance store in the van pictured below. The Torrance store doesn't have a kitchen.

California Launch: My Fit Foods Opening Hermosa Beach, Torrance Healthy Fresh-Prepared Food Stores February 24

Houston, Texas-based healthy fresh-prepared foods' retailer My Fit Foods plans to open its first two stores in California in the Southern California cities of Hermosa Beach (1005 Pacific Coast Highway) and Torrance (2543-G Pacific Coast Highway) Friday, February 24, according to a fresh posting on its new website, which the retailer went live with Friday, as we noted in this story - February 17, 2012: Texas-Based Healthy Fresh Foods' Retailer My Fit Foods Opening First California Store in Hermosa Beach.

The Hermosa Beach and Torrance My Fit Foods' stores are the first two of what the fresh-prepared foods' retailer says will be numerous retail outlets in the Golden State.

The My Fit Foods' store at 2543-G Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance is located immediatly next door (building right of the awning in the photo above) to a Trader Joe's grocery market in a busy shopping center that also includes a Whole Foods Market store, a Weight Watchers shop and numerous restaurants, like the Casa Organic Cafe, which is one space down (photo below) from the My Fit Foods store. The van in front of the store is part of the fleet My Fit Foods' uses to transport the refrigerated, fresh-prepared foods to its stores from its central kitchen.

Locating the store right next to the Trader Joe's should be a big bonus for My Fit Foods for two reasons: The store will benefit from the foot traffic generated by the market; and, since Trader Joe's doesn't offer much in the way of refrigerated ready meals (its main focus is on frozen), that fact and its proximity to the TJ's could help it sell more of its fresh-prepared meals.

As we reported yesterday, My Fit Foods is also expanding from its Texas home base into Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho and Oklahoma, in addition to California.

My Fit Foods, which currently has about 44 stores, offers a variety of healthy fresh-prepared meals, side dishes, breakfast foods and snacks for takeout.

The foods are prepared in the company's corporate kitchens - and in some cases in-store - then packaged for sale in the stores.

The fresh-made foods, 95% of which the company says are gluten-free, are prepared using lean protein, are low in carbohydrates, and contain heart healthy fats. There are currently about 60 items on the menu, with more being added regularly.

The primary focus of the fresh-prepared food shops is takeout. However, the My Fit Foods' store's also have an area where customers can eat-in at a counter and a few tables with chairs. The store's have microwave ovens to heat the prepared meals.

In addition to the fresh-prepared foods, The retailer offers a line of vitamins and nutritional supplements under the My Fit Foods' brand, which is sells in the stores. The vitamins and supplements are part of the overall healthy foods/healthy eating/healthy lifestyle niche the company is focused on.

Besides the standard storefront retailing of the fresh-prepared foods, My Fit Foods also offers shoppers various customized healthy meal plans which they can sign up for, letting the company do the meal planning and food preparation for them. Among those plans is what My Fit Foods' calls its "21-Day Challenge," a three-week, five-meal-a-day program it says will start consumers on the road to healthier eating and better nutrition.

Texas-Based Healthy Fresh Foods' Retailer My Fit Foods Opening First California Store in Hermosa Beach

My Fit Foods' first store in California is set to go into the building above in Hermosa Beach, which is in the process of being renovated. [Photo credit: Fresh & Easy Buzz. Photo taken February 12, 2012.]

Houston, Texas-based healthy fresh-prepared foods' retailer My Fit Foods plans to open its first store in California at 1005 Pacific Coast Highway in the coastal Southern California city of Hermosa Beach and a second unit at 2543-G Pacific Coast Highway in Torrance, with more stores to come, Fresh & Easy Buzz has learned.

The Hermosa Beach store (pictured at top), which is currently being renovated, is about a quarter-mile away from the Fresh & Easy Express market on the Pacific Coast Highway, which was opened by Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market on January 11, 2012.

Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market puts a major merchandising emphasis on ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat fresh-prepared foods in both its standard format (10,000 square-foot) grocery markets and in its smaller (3,000 square-foot) Fresh & Easy Express stores, five of which have been opened to date, all in Southern California.
A view from the Pacific Coast Highway of the My Fit Foods store.
The soon-to-open My Fit Foods store at 1005 Pacific Coast Highway in Hermosa Beach is going into what was until August 2011 a restaurant called Rocky Cola Cafe, which closed then. Prior to that the building housed a Denny's restaurant. The building is about 2,000 square-feet in size, based on our observation.

A Fresh & Easy Buzz correspondent has been monitoring the progress of the planned My Fit Foods store at 1025 Pacific Coast Highway since early January 2012. Three weeks ago the sign depicted in the photograph at top wasn't on the building's facade, for example.

No date has yet been set for the store's opening, according to our sources. But a sign on the building says it's "opening soon." The building's renovation has been steadily progressing over the last few weeks and looks to be nearly completed.

My Fit Foods hasn't publicly announced the planned location or the store's opening date.

My Fit Foods, which describes itself as a healthy, fresh, pre-packaged takeout meal company and retailer, is currently hiring "front of the house" employees (store clerks) for both its first store in Hermosa Beach and the second unit in Torrance. Starting pay is $10 hour. The retailer also hires what it calls nutritional consultants for each store.

Texas-based My Fit Foods offers a variety of healthy fresh-prepared meals, side dishes, breakfast foods and snacks for takeout.

Shoppers can also order the fresh-prepared meals and other foods online, for pickup at the stores.

My Fit Foods recently launched what it calls a corporate wellness division, through which it's offering to provide healthy eating and nutritional benefits to companies, using its fresh-prepared food products as the centerpiece of the program.

The fresh-prepared foods retailer - it currently has about 34-stores in four cities in Texas and recently opened its first store in Arizona (in Scottsdale) and has plans to launch into Nevada, Utah, Idaho and Oklahoma in addition to California - operates on a mixed corporate-owned/franchise model. The majority of the stores are owned by independent operators. The company provides the culinary/product development and the prepared foods, along with merchandising, marketing and other services under the joint-venture arrangement.

In addition to the franchised standalone stores, My Fit Foods is also pursuing the supermarket channel as a source of distribution for its fresh-prepared foods - but not in the traditional on-the-shelf manner.

Instead, the fresh-prepared foods' retailer has a deal with Texas-based supermarket chain H-E-B to put "My Fit Foods" healthy meal kiosks in selected stores. At present H-E-B is testing the kiosks in about eight supermarkets in Texas.

The supermarket kiosk concept is something My Fit Foods is interested in expanding into California, Nevada, Arizona and elsewhere where it plans to launch, signing up a chain in each region to test with like it's doing with H-E-B in Texas.

The fresh-prepared foods retailer's focus at present in the Golden State is Southern California. But its also interesting in opening stores in Northern California.

In Nevada the initial market region focus is metro Las Vegas. In Arizona it's the Phoenix metropolitan region.

Tesco's Fresh & Easy has its 182 stores in California (138 units), Arizona (24 units) and Nevada (20 units).

Houston-based My Fit Foods was founded in 2006 by certified nutritionist-entrepreneur Mario Mendias, who also spent 19-years' working as a personal trainer before starting the company.

In 2007 Mendias partnered with restaurant industry veteran Anthony Milton, and the two partners and majority-owners launched My Fit Foods as a fresh-prepared foods' retail chain, focused on healthy eating and nutrition.

In describing the start of My Fit Foods Mendias says: "No matter how much I preached to the clients I trained every week that 80% of your results, in regards to your health and fitness goals, are derived from what you are eating, what I found wasn't that they were not listening to me. It was simply that most people just didn’t have the time, knowledge or support to stay consistent with a clean and healthy diet. So, it was simple to me, I decided to do all the healthy cooking for them, and My Fit Foods was born out of my tiny apartment kitchen on Memorial drive in Houston, Texas."

Founder Mendias says his plans are to grow the fresh-prepared foods chain throughout the western U.S., after having what he says is a good reception in Texas.

My Fit Foods is fairly aggressive from a promotional standpoint in Texas. For example, the fresh-prepared foods retailer uses its Facebook page regularly, promoting the stores, its fresh-prepared foods, and holding contests and other promotional activities aimed at customers and potential new customers alike.

Additionally, My Fit Foods, which has as its motto, "Eat Fit. Live Fit,  just went live today with a redesigned website.

There's no shortage of retailers of various formats offering prepared foods for takeout in Southern California, including those offering healthy options - grocers, mass-merchandisers, club stores, convenience stores, food kiosks, restaurants, food trucks and others.

The franchise model My Fit Foods works on though could help it in competing in the food mecca that is Southern California because under such a system the independent owner-operators share in the financial investment, bearing most of the upfront costs, while the company earns an income stream from providing the concept, culinary development, food, merchandising and marketing to the franchise owners.

But the independent owner-operators' success (or failure) is My Fit Foods' success (or failure) as well, so its a symbiotic relationship, both operationally and financially.

My Fit Foods' ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat takeout foods appear to be popular in the four cities in Texas where it has its stores - Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio - based on conversations we've had with customers of some of those stores.

Much of the success of the stores also depends on how strong of a relationship the owner-operators build with customers and potential customers, something independents can be good at when they have their own money on the line. Key to that is also the quality of support they get from the corporate folks.

My Fit Foods wants to open numerous stores throughout Southern California, as well as move into Northern California, using the model it's been following in Texas since 2007, which is to focus on cities and neighborhoods that best fit the healthy, upscale takeout foods' customer demographic and lifestyle.

The company is also in a major growth phase, which is why its expanding into California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Oklahoma, according to founder Mendias.

Raley's Supermarkets Introducing New 'Raley's Tonight' Fresh Heat-and-Eat Gourmet Entrees

Private Brand Showcase: Fresh-Prepared Foods' Category

West Sacramento, California-based  Supermarkets is introducing a new brand - "Raley's Tonight" - and new line of ready-to-heat, packaged, fresh-prepared gourmet meal entrees in its Raley's, Nob Hill and Bel-Air banner food and grocery markets in Northern California and northern Nevada this week.

The "Raley's Tonight" ready-to-heat gourmet entrees, which Raley's is merchandising in its refrigerated meat departments rather than in its service delis, were most of the grocery chain's prepared foods items are sold, come in nine varieties: Beef Florentine Flank Steak; Chicken Cordon Bleu; Asparagus Cheddar Stuffed Chicken Breast; Stuffed Boneless Pork Chop; Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms; Beef Fajitas; Chicken Fajitas; Beef Kabobs; and Chicken Kabobs.

The fresh, refrigerated packaged entrees, which are designed as a dinner for two people, sell for about $10 each, and take about 35 minutes to prepare in the oven.

Raley's already offers numerous refrigerated ready-to-heat entrees and side dishes, pre-packaged and in bulk, that take only a few minutes (quick meals) to prepare using  microwave oven, including its "Raley's TO GO" brand, which the grocer introduced last fall, and which we reported on in this story - October 30, 2010: Raley's Launches New 'Raley's TO GO' Pre-Packaged, Refrigerated Fresh-Prepared Foods Line.

However, the new "Raley's Tonight" heat-and-eat entrees are designed to take a longer (the 30-35 minutes) to prepare because of the premium quality, along with the fact the retailer is attempting with the new brand and line to tap into a growing trend among many consumers, who want pre-made meals that require some simple effort on their part, such as popping the entree in the oven and waiting for the timer to go off 30 minutes later, along with preparing something simple to have with the main course.

To this end, is offering consumers "complete dinner suggestions" for each of the entrees. The suggestions, which shoppers can follow, preparing the side-dishes while waiting for the "Raley's Tonight" entree of their choice to heat in the oven, are available in the stores, on the shopping list section of Raley's website, and on the product packages.

For example, Raley's suggests preparing and serving steamed vegetables and a white and wild rice blend to go with the Beef Florentine Flank Steak; steamed vegetables and au gratin potatoes to complement the Chicken Cordon Blue entree; and rice pilaf or risotto and a green salad with the "Raley's Tonight" Stuffed Pork Chop.

Raley's has been pioneer in the ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat fresh-prepared foods category since the late 1980's. Most recently the privately-held supermarket chain has been focusing on creating new brands and lines of ready-to-heat and ready-to-eat fresh, refrigerated foods under its Raley's and Nob Hill Trading Company private brands.

As an example, the grocer recently introduced a line of ready-to-eat gourmet panini sandwiches under its Nob Hill Trading Company brand, and a line of breakfast meal bowls under the Raley's brand.

The supermarket chain is also offering two ready-to-heat complete gourmet meals (designed to feed 8-10 people) for Easter -  Easter Lobster Ravioli Dinner and Eastern Bourbon Maple Glazed Ham Dinner - along with its Nob Hill Trading Company brand ready-to-heat premium Fire-Glazed Spiral Cut Ham, which is locally produced for Raley's by artisan meat guru Bill Andreetta, at his Sunnyvalley Smoked Meats in Manteca, California. Manteca is in the Northern Central Valley near Modesto, located about 80 miles from the grocer's corporate headquarters in West Sacramento.

Raley's operates 133 stores in Northern California and northern Nevada - 85 Raley's banner superstores (located throughout Northern California and northern Nevada), 22 Nob Hill Foods supermarkets (in the San Francisco Bay Area, the central coast and the northern Central Valley); 21 Bel Air Market supermarkets (in the Sacramento region); and five Food Source discount warehouse stores, in the Sacramento area and in the Bay Area city of Hayward.

According to company spokeswoman Ashley Zepernick, Raley's, which was founded in 1935 by Tom Raley, who died in 1991, and is owned by his daughter, Joyce Raley-Teel, currently has annual sales of $3.1 billion -  and about 13,400 employees.

Joyce Raley-Teel and her husband, James Teel, are co-chairs of Raley's board. Both are former Raley's senior-level executives, who retired from their respective day-to-day positions few years ago

Ms. Raley-Teel's son, Michael Teel, is the CEO of the family-owned grocery chain. Teel, who was the CEO of Raley's from 1996 -to- 2002  but left in 2002 to pursue entrepreneurial interests, returned last year as head of the chain to, in his words, "right the family ship."

Raley's has been struggling financially since 2009, and continues to struggle, although it's made some significant progress in the last year by cutting labor costs (layoffs at its corporate headquarters primarily) and streamlining its corporate structure; creating better operational efficiencies; improving its pricing profile and kicking-up its merchandising, marketing and promotional efforts.

"The growth of its private brand fresh-prepared foods program - including the introduction late last year of its  "Raley's TO GO" private brand entrees and side-dishes and the launching of the "Raley's Tonight" brand entrees this week - is one of the added merchandising efforts the 76-year old privately-held grocery chain has embarked on since Michael Teel returned as CEO in 2010.

In the spirit of our 'Private Brand Showcase,' we offer this marketing and merchandising tag line to Raley's, at no charge. The tag line: "Don't Cook Tonight. Try ... 'Raley's Tonight.'

Raley's, which is an innovator and pioneer among U.S. grocery chains in the fresh-prepared foods category, is promoting its 'Raley's TO GO' line launch extensively.

For example, this week the Sacramento-based family-owned grocery chain, which operates 133 stores in Northern California and northern Nevada under the Raley's, Bel-Air, Nob Hill Foods and Food Source banners, is featuring all 23 varieties of the pre-packaged fresh-prepared foods items in a promotion, which includes special price points - $5 each for all of the items except the family size entrees, which are $10 each - along with an added bonus: When shoppers buy any four packages (mix and match) of the $5 retail items (20 SKUs total)they get a fifth one free.

The $10 each family size meals provide four-six servings, according to the packaging. All of the items are designed to take about two and one half minutes to heat in a microwave oven.

In addition to promoting its new pre-packaged fresh-prepared foods line in its weekly advertising circular, Raley's has displays featuring the 'Raley's TO GO' products, along with colorful point-of-purchase signage in the refrigerated fresh deli sections, where the items are merchandised, in all of its stores.

Raley's is also promoting the new line on the radio, such as the promotion it's currently doing with Sacramento-based radio station KYMX. The promotion, which has been running since Wednesday, offers listeners a chance to win four free 'Raley's TO GO' meals each day. The meal includes one entrée and two side dishes.

The new fresh-prepared foods line was created by Raley’s corporate chef, Evelyn Miliate, who says about her inspiration for the products: "As a mom, I understand the need to have quick and easy dinner solutions that I can rely on. With Raley’s To Go, I can feel good about feeding my family food that I know they will love – and at a great value."

The "mom" mention in chef Miliate's quote dovetails with Raley's current positioning and marketing campaign focus, which is called "It's A Mom's World" (Raley's is, that is), and based on its Mom's World Panel, which is a volunteer group of mothers the grocer has assembled to provide the grocery chain with input, ideas, dialogue and feedback. Raley's has a special Facebook page and Twitter feed for its Mom's World Panel, as well as devoting this special section on its website to the group and campaign.

Raley's, which was founded by the late Tom Raley in 1935 and is still family-owned - his daughter Joyce Raley-Teel is the chairman and majority owner and her son Michael Teel is CEO - was one of the first movers among U.S. grocery chains in terms of getting into the ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat fresh-prepared foods category. It's been one of the food retailing leaders in the category since then.

Since the 1980's Raley's has offered an extensive selection of fresh-prepared foods in its stores. That offering has grown even more extensively in terms of the variety of fresh foods available. For example, the stores feature everything from simple ready-to-eat grab-and-go items like sandwiches and salads and ready-to-heat comfort foods, to a wide-variety of prepared ethnic foods and complete restaurant-quality gourmet dinners.

Raley's merchandises its fresh-prepared foods in both bulk deli-case-style form and pre-packaged. For example, sandwiches can be bought pre-packaged our ordered from the deli counter, where a clerk makes them by hand sandwich shop-style. Salads, meals, entrees and side-dish items are also available in both bulk and pre-packaged forms.

The 'Raley's TO GO' line of pre-packaged fresh, refrigerated foods is clearly designed to tap into the "on the go" shopper who doesn't want to order and wait at the deli counter for her fresh-prepared foods purchases. Raley's already offers numerous ready-to-eat and heat pre-packaged foods items, as mentioned above, but the new 23-item line is the most extensive introduction of convenience meals and related items the grocer has launched to date, based on our long time observation of Raley's.

United Kingdom-based Tesco's incoming CEO Philip Clarke (March 2011), who's currently head of the global retailer's international operations in Europe and Asia but not its Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market fresh food and grocery chain in the U.S. (Tim Mason is CEO), said in an October 6, 2010 conference call reporting the Tesco plc's half-year sales that one of Fresh & Easy's advantages in California, Nevada and Arizona where it has its 168 stores is that the competition doesn't have the fresh-prepared foods offering that the Tesco-owned chain does.

Taking his statement as face value, that it isn't spin, which we do, it would appear Clarke isn't getting good competitive intelligence from Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market headquarters in El Segundo, California when it comes to the fresh-prepared foods category and its competitors.

Additionally, based on his October 6 statement, it would also appear Clarke's not directly familiar with the numerous competitors (and soon to be competitors in Northern California in early 2011) to Fresh & Easy - Safeway/Vons, Walmart, Ralphs, Fry's, Raley's, Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe's, Bristol Farms, Bashas, Sprouts Farmers Market, Henry's Farmers Market (we could go on but will stop there) that offer extensive fresh-prepared foods selections in their respective stores and continue to add more variety and quantity to the offerings.

Memo to incoming Tesco CEO Philip Clarke: It's a fresh-prepared foods competitive jungle out there. Fresh & Easy's competitors in the category are many - and growing. Fresh & Easy has a good category offering - but it's just one among many competitors.

Raley's new 'Raley's TO GO' line of 23 varieties of pre-packaged fresh-prepared foods is merely one example of this growth, along with the continuing development in the category among grocers throughout the U.S.

Friday Frolic: Getting Social at the Georgetown Social Safeway Gala Opening in Washington DC

Perhaps only in tony Georgetown in Washington DC, the neighborhood where President John F. Kennedy lived in the late 1950's while serving as a U.S. Senator and where he kept his beloved townhouse even after being elected President a few years later and moving into the White House, would women get decked out in expensive designer gowns and stiletto heels and men put on suits and ties for the grand opening of a supermarket.

But Georgetown's Social Safeway, which will now be open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, isn't a mere supermarket. It's a Georgetown, and District-wide, institution. Therefore, holding a "gala in a grocery store" only seems fitting.

The store has been called the Social Safeway since the 1970's because it's a place where single Washingtonians are known to pick up one another, along with a steak, bottle of wine and a bunch of arugula. The residential blocks of Georgetown are filled with couples who met at the Social Safeway.

It's also a store where it's not uncommon to spot a famous, or infamous, Senator pondering the ripeness of the bananas or melons in the produce department (hint: Senator and former 2004 Democratic nominee for President John Kerry lives in Georgetown), or to see a onetime political power broker, now retired, pushing a shopping cart filled with steaks, ice cream, cookies, ready meals - and lots of bottles of wine and spirits.

The Social Safeway is back. And, after having the Safeway store closed for a year for expansion and a complete remodeling, the movers and shakers of Georgetown were ready to welcome back their new, bigger (71,000 square-feet), more upscale and greener "neighborhood" grocery store in a big way on Wednesday night.

And Safeway Stores, Inc. didn't disappoint.

On Wednesday evening (May 5), the night before the Social Safeway's grand reopening yesterday (May 6), the grocery chain threw an invitation-only VIP gala opening party rivaling events and receptions held at the White House or the State Department. There was a jazz orchestra, 10 wine and champagne bars, a Belvedere vodka fountain and brie cheese flown in from Paris, and enough types and varieties of foods and desserts to make even Martha Stewart happy. Not impressed yet? Well, there was a red carpet literally rolled out in front of the store for entering guests, and valet parking was available for those who drove. And we don't want to forget the fancy Safeway-logo ice sculptures, noted by the Washingtonian blog. You can see a photograph of one of the ice sculptures here.

The 650 guests - a who's who of Washington DC's political, lobbying, media, business and social circles - mingled, talked politics and more, just like they would do at a fancy Georgetown cocktail party thrown by social maven and Washington Post society writer and religion columnist Sally Quinn, who lives in the neighborhood. But rather than standing next to one of the impressive works of art at the home of Ms. Quinn and her husband, former Washington Post executive editor and current vice president-at-large, Ben Bradlee - who was best friends with the late President Kennedy - the well dressed men and women did their socializing at the Social Safeway in the produce department, near the in-store sushi and nut bars, next to a display of eggs, and in the store's uber-upscale 'Signature Cafe,' which features flat screen televisions, couches and tables, free WiFi, and an open hearth fireplace, along with fresh, prepared foods of every kind.

We wrote about the Georgetown Social Safeway in this piece - The Branded 'Signature Cafe' in Safeway Stores' Soon to Open 'Social Safeway' in Washington D.C. Should Turn A Few Heads - on April 8, 2010, from the perspective of how the store is Safeway Stores' most ambitious fresh, prepared foods merchandising effort to date.

However, since we do business and merchandising angles better than we do social event stories, although the two are usually linked in real life, we're going to turn the rest of the page (except our concluding paragraph) over to the Washington Post's talented social scene writer Lisa Rein, who attended Wednesday night's VIP gala opening at the greatly expanded and upscaled Social Safeway in Washington DC's Georgetown neighborhood.

>At the link at the end of this sentence you'll find Ms. Rein's story from the Washington Post, "With a VIP gala opening, Georgetown's Social Safeway is back on the market," which details all of the action at Wednesday night's Social Safeway gala opening party. Click here to read the article.

>And since no proper grocery store grand opening gala coverage is complete without pictures, here's a photo gallery-slideshow from the Washington Post of the Wednesday night bash. By the way, you won't find any humans dressed as cartoon characters giving out candy, a staple of supermarket grand openings, in these pictures. [Note: the fellow in the first photo in the gallery - the one wearing glasses, dressed in the dark suit with blue tie, and raising his glass of wine - is Safeway Stores, Inc. CEO Steve Burd. The women in the peach suit next to him, the one drinking champagne instead of wine, is civil rights leader and Washington D.C. Delegate to Congress Eleanor Holmes-Norton. Since District of Columbia doesn't get a Member of Congress like the states' do, she's called a Delegate. She also doesn't get to vote on Congressional bills, like the Members of Congress do. Other than that, she's a member of the club. Can you name any of the others pictured in the photograph?]

>Lastly, since words and pictures don't always tell the complete story, we include this video news report, which offers the sounds of Wednesday night's Georgetown Social Safeway gala opening. Additionally, these two video news reports are done in the store on its grand opening day, Thursday. They feature many of the in-store departments like produce, the Signature Cafe and the nut bar. The video reports are from DC's Fox 5 Television.

In case you're wondering why Safeway Stores' would spend so much money creating a super-upscale, 71,000 square-foot supermarket in Georgetown, at a time when so many American consumers (and most of the everyday residents of DC) are trading down and doing their grocery shopping at discount grocers like Walmart, Aldi, Sav-A-Lot and even dollar format stores, let us remind you - this is Georgetown in Washington DC, where recession or not, if you live in the neighborhood, you're likely to be either a Senator, Washington Lawyer, highly paid lobbyist, business executive, media star, or foreign diplomat. Or if not, are living way beyond your means. And, in many cases, you're also likely to have some connection to the U.S. government, often including a financial one that involves getting paid in one way or another with taxpayer money. So, recession or not, the movers and shakers of Georgetown aren't about to go discount when it comes to grocery shopping. And Safeway is obviously glad they aren't.

When it Comes to Fresh, Prepared Foods, New York City's Duane Reade is Simply 'deLish' for Walgreens

Fresh, Prepared Foods Retailing & Merchandising

Walgreen Co. is - as of Friday, April 9 - officially the owner of New York's Duane Reade drug store chain, which with 258 stores in the New York City metro area is the number one drug channel retailer in the market.

That's a big bite out of the drug (and food and grocery) retailing apple for the drug chain in the "Big Apple."

Walgreens says it plans to operate the stores under the Duane Reade banner (perhaps not forever), which is a wise move considering the strong equity the name has in New York City. It's CEO, John Lederer, also is staying on for now.

Walgreen Co. has 70 drug stores under the Walgreens banner in New York City. The acquisition of the 258 Duane Reade units brings its total store count 328 in New York City, which makes it fae and away the leading drug chain in the region.

There are nearly 7,500 Walgreens stores in the U.S. The retailer had 2009 annual sales of $63 billion. Duane Reade had 2009 sales of about $1 billion.

Ownership of Duane Reade makes the drug retailer's plans to get into the fresh, prepared foods merchandising and retailing business much, much easier than it was just a mere two months ago, when the leading U.S. drug store retailer announced its intent to buy New York City's 50 year old iconic drug chain for $618 million and the assumption of its debt in a friendly acquisition.

Walgreen Co. had announced its plans to develop a fresh, prepared foods program just a few weeks prior to its February 17, 2010 Duane Reade acquisition announcement, by the way.

Fresh & Easy Buzz first reported on Walgreens' plans to get into fresh, prepared foods retailing in January of this year.

We were the first publication to report that Walgreen Co. had hired former Tesco Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market director of fresh foods Jim Jensen to head the start up of its fresh, prepared foods program, something the drug chain confirmed shortly thereafter. [January 6, 2010 Breaking Buzz: Corporate Director of Fresh Foods Jim Jensen Leaves Tesco's Fresh & Easy.] [January 15, 2010: Just-Exited Tesco Fresh & Easy Fresh Foods Director Jim Jensen to Head New Fresh Foods Initiative at Walgreens Drug Chain.]

The reason Walgreens' development of its fresh, prepared foods program, which according to our sources is coming along nicely, just got easier for the chain is because Duane Reade has an impressive fresh, prepared foods program operating in some of its newest and most-recently remodeled stores in New York City, including its newest store on 8th Avenue (between 16th & 17th) in Manhattan's Chelsea district, and the location at 1350 Broadway (at 35th Street) in Manhattan, both of which we've visited.

The primary focus of Duane Reade's fresh, prepared foods merchandising is on offering an selection of packaged, ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat fresh, grab-and-go type foods under its own "deLish" private brand, merchandised in attractive and convenient refrigerated cases, like those pictured above and below. The ready-to-eat foods include sandwiches made by New York City prepared foods guru Eli Zabar (also pictured below), salads, ready meals, side dishes, snacks, desserts and more for all three meal occasions: breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The stores also feature a selection of fresh breads and baked goods merchandised in clear plastic display fixtures (pictured below).

All of its fresh, prepared foods items are made for and distributed to Duane Reade by local food vendors (like Eli Zabar) on a daily basis.

There's also a selection of manufacturer branded refrigerated fresh foods, along with a huge assortment of chilled beverages, in the stores' "grab-and-go" fresh foods area. Each store also has a fresh-brewed coffee station, like the one pictured below. Duane Reade's is a full-blown fresh, prepared foods program, not a mere hobby.

The stores look more like mini-supermarkets than they do traditional drug stores. (See below.) Think "channel bending" - one part small-format food store and one part convenience store, combined with a full drug store and pharmacy, with a fresh, prepared foods cherry on top. About all that's missing are fresh produce and traditional fresh meats. There are some convenience-type meats in the stores.

These newer and more-recently remodeled Duane Reade stores also feature an extensive selection of packaged foods, groceries, perishables and non-foods - which the chain has been adding in nearly all of its stores in various degrees depending on the available square footage of each respective store.

The key feature in these above product categories are Duane Reade's various food (and beverage) and non food private brands, which in our analysis and opinion are some of the best looking (design) and better quality store brands produced by retailers of any channel we've come across in recent times.

Duane Reade's fresh, prepared foods have been well-received in the New York City stores where they're currently being merchandised and sold. So much so in fact that including the category in its new and remodeled stores has been top priority for Duane Reade, which is something we're told will continue to be the case under Walgreens' ownership.

In fact, according to our sources, Walgreen Co. plans to speed up the process of putting fresh, prepared foods in the Duane Reade stores. It also plans to use the Duane Reade program as the blueprint for testing the sales of the ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat foods in some of its existing 70 Walgreens banner stores in New York City, starting fairly soon.

And of course, in terms of blueprints, the Duane Reade program is invaluable to the work ex-Tesco Fresh & Easy fresh foods director Jim Jensen and others are and have been doing for the last couple months in getting Walgreens' Fresh, prepared foods program developed.

New York City also happens to fit in very well with the drug chain's strategy for its fresh, prepared foods program, which puts an emphasis - but not exclusively by any means - on highly dense market regions like Manhattan, along with markets like Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco and others.

As we discussed in this January 2010 piece [Walgreens Eyeing San Francisco For Fresh Foods Program: Could it Strike Category Gold in the City By the Bay?] dense urban regions like New York City and San Francisco lend themselves well to grab-and-go and other forms of fresh, prepared foods merchandising and sales.

Walgreen Co. has lots of stores in both these cities (328 in New York City, population 13 million) and 64 in San Francisco, population 900,000) resulting in what in our analysis is an excellent formula for fresh, prepared foods retailing. That formula: Dense urban markets/ lots of people on the ground x having a high store count in such markets = a good grab-and-go prepared foods market. (The Walgreens store above is in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood)

When it comes to fresh, prepared foods, Duane Reade gives Walgreen Co. not only the leading drug category market share in the number one urban market in the U.S. - New York City - it also brings the leading U.S. drug chain an already operating and largely successful fresh, prepared foods program right when it needs it most - during Walgreens' own category development stage.

The Branded 'Signature Cafe' in Safeway Stores' Soon to Open 'Social Safeway' in Washington D.C. Should Turn A Few Heads

Fresh, Prepared Foods Retailing & Merchandising

Safeway Stores' soon to open (May 6), completely remodeled (now 71,000 square foot) supermarket in Washington D.C's Georgetown neighborhood (pictured above) will include arguably the grocery chain's largest and most elaborate in-store branded "Signature Cafe" deli and fresh, prepared foods store-within-a-store to date.

In fact, take away the dry grocery, non-foods and fresh meat and produce departments, and it looks almost like Safeway's "The Market" prepared foods-focused small store format, two stores of which currently exist in Long Beach (opened in May 2008) and San Jose, California (opened in August 2009) respectively.

Of course, that's no accident: Safeway's Signature Cafe prepared foods brand, which the grocer has now extended as a brand for the deli and prepared foods departments in some of its newest built-from-the-ground-up and remodeled stores, is in large part the inspiration for its "The Market" small-format grocery stores.

And like Walmart, which is branding the deli and prepared foods departments in some of its supercenters and Neighborhood Market supermarkets "Marketside" - named after its small-format, fresh, prepared foods-focused stores and fresh, prepared foods brand of the same name - Safeway has figured out that a grocer doesn't need to build a small-format store all its own to be in the "store branded" ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat fresh foods business.

Rather, since both chains have existing mega-real estate in the form of thousands of U.S. stores, why not put that prepared foods store - be it "Signature Cafe" or "Marketside" - in existing stores, in the form of a branded store-within-a-store deli/prepared foods department and cafe.

The "Signature Cafe" in the soon to open two-story Georgetown Safeway (its Lifestyle format) store (pictured above), also called the "Social Safeway" because of the 'who's who' of Washington DC politicos and others that shop there, is indeed both a real eat-in cafe and a prepared foods store-within-a-store.

It's jam-packed with ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat fresh, prepared foods of all kinds. There's all of the Signature Cafe store brand ready-to-heat packaged entrees and side dishes, merchandised in self-serve refrigerated cases, for example.

There's also fresh, prepared foods (salads, entrees, snacks, sides and more) and deli items (lunch meats, cheeses and the like of every kind) merchandised in bulk, behind full-service cases. It's old fashion deli meets new-age self-serve prepared foods shop.

Add a mini-pizza parlor with fresh baked pizzas, a sandwich bar, and an Italian gelato bar to the mix.

There's also grab and go sections for other foods and beverages, along with separate pay stations, so that customers using the "Signature Cafe" don't have to use the store's central check outs in order to pay for foods they either eat-in or take-out. Think that store-within-a-store concept.

Additionally, there's a modern wood burning fireplace in the "Signature Cafe." Around the fireplace are numerous tables and chairs where customers can sit and eat. There's wide-screen flat-panel television screens and free WiFi in the cafe, which also has a balcony with a view of busy Wisconsin Avenue.

Of course, such features are only fitting for a store nicknamed the "Social Safeway."

Safeway closed the Georgetown store a little over a year ago for the remodeling. When it opens on May 6, we think its "Signature Cafe" deli and fresh, prepared foods store-within-a-store will turn a few heads, including perhaps a few in the food retailing industry.

Fresh & Easy's New 'EatWell' Healthier Fresh, Prepared Foods Brand to Hit Stores on April 7

Yesterday, Fresh & Easy Buzz broke the news that Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is launching a new brand of healthier ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat fresh, prepared foods called EatWell. [Read our story - Thursday, April 1, 2010 Tesco's Fresh & Easy to Launch New 'Eat Well' Brand Lower-Sodium, Fewer-Calorie Prepared Foods Line.]

Fresh & Easy plans to launch the EatWell line in its stores on April 7.

Among the 17 varieties of ready-to-eat and heat prepared meals and sides in the new EatWell line include: Salads, like the Market Salad pictured at the bottom of the piece; and ethnic dishes, such as the Singapore Style Noodles, pictured at top; and the Latin Arroz Con Pollo meal, pictured below.

Most of the EatWell items will retail for about $3.99 and slightly below, accept for a couple of higher-end fresh salmon ready-meals - a 12 ounce Honey Dijon Salmon entree and a 12 ounce Teriyaki Salmon meal - which will sell for about $4.99 each.

The EatWell brand ready-meals and side-dishes contain less than 25% of the average daily requirement in fat, sodium, and calorie contents, based on a 2,000 calorie per day diet, according to the grocer.

In our report we noted Fresh & Easy was holding a preview and tasting of the line last night for a selected group of people. And the grocer did just that.

Many of the people attending the event last evening were personal bloggers, targeted by Fresh & Easy in the hope they will write about the event and the new EatWell fresh, prepared foods. Today, Tesco's Fresh & Easy is announcing the new fresh, prepared foods line on its Twitter.com feed.

One of those personal bloggers, Oakley Boren, who publishes the Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market fan blog "Temple of Fresh & Easy," attended the EatWell brand preview and tasting last night at the grocer's headquarters in Southern California.

Today she published some photographs of the new EatWell line, along with additional pictures from the event, on her flickr.com site.

Additionally, Fresh & Easy previewed some new Fresh & Easy brand food and grocery items at the event last night. There are a couple photographs of those new items on the site.

Tesco's Fresh & Easy to Launch New 'EatWell' Brand Lower-Sodium, Fewer-Calorie Prepared Foods Line

Tesco's Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is preparing to launch a new line of fresh, prepared foods items under the EatWell brand, Fresh & Easy Buzz has learned.

Fresh & Easy is previewing the new prepared foods line to a pre-selected group of people this evening at its Southern California headquarters.

The new EatWell brand and line differs primarily from the grocer's current Fresh & Easy brand of prepared foods items in that it has less sodium and fewer calories than the grocer's current fresh, prepared foods items do.

The primary product focus of the new brand and line is on ready-to-heat prepared meals and side dishes, or as Fresh & Easy refers to them in the British vernacular, ready-meals.

If the EatWell fresh, prepared foods line does well, Tesco's Fresh & Easy could extend the brand into other product and store categories.

Interestingly, as a brand name EatWell has some British origins, just as Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market, which is owned by United Kingdom-based Tesco, does.

The United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency, the British version of the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), uses "Eat Well, Be Well," as its official brand name or tag line, as you can see on its Web Site here. In fact, the Web site name itself is: eatwell.gov.uk.

The British government's Food Standards Agency also publishes a graphic guide called "the eatwell plate" (pictured above), which depicts how much of what foods from each food group people should eat in order to achieve a healthy and balanced diet. Among the health guidelines offered include suggested caloric and sodium levels. (Double-click on the graphic to enlarge it.)

Walmart Adds Additional Marketside Fresh Food Items to Marketside.com Not Long After Our February Reports

Walmart has now added its Marketside private brand fresh soups, which we reported on in February [Walmart Introducing New Ready-To-Heat Prepared Entrees, Fresh Soups Under its Marketside Brand], to its marketside.com Web site. There are eight varieties in the ready-to-heat soup line.

In addition, Walmart just-recently added its eight-item Marketside refrigerated take-and-bake pizza line (pictured at the top) to the site.

The pizzas were the very first item Walmart rolled out in its Marketside ready-to-heat and ready-to-eat, prepared foods line. It introduced the pizzas in selected stores in fall 2009. The refrigerated pizzas take about 17-19 minutes to bake at in a conventional oven.

Walmart has recently given the Marketside pizza package a makeover, giving it a new look, and bringing its graphic design in line with all of the other Marketside private brand prepared foods products introduced to date.

You can view the pizzas, soups and other items at the http://www.marketside.com/ site.

The reason the soup line have now been added to marketside.com is because Walmart has rolled the items out to many more of its Supercenters and Neighborhood Market supermarkets than was the case when we reported on the new Marketside store brand prepared foods items in February.

The pizzas were only recently added to marketside.com because of the packaging makeover mentioned above.

Next up for brand Marketside is a line of artisian breads and baked goods. Walmart is currently preparing to start introducing some of the items in selected stores soon, we've learned.

Additional varieties of Marketside fresh, prepared entrees and other ready-to-heat and ready-to-eat food items are also in the works, as we've previously elaborated on in a number of the posts linked below.

Walmart Launching New 'Marketside Fresh Garden Salsa' Line Under its Fast-Growing Fresh Foods Store Brand

Fresh, Prepared Foods Merchandising

In addition to the new Marketside fresh, ready-to-heat soup, prepared entree and value-added, pre-packaged fresh produce lines we reported on and wrote about in these to pieces on February 28 [Walmart Introducing New Ready-To-Heat Prepared Entrees, Fresh Soups Under its Marketside Brand and Walmart Launching New Value-Added Pre-Packaged Fresh Produce Line Under its Marketside Fresh Foods Brand], Walmart Stores, Inc. is spicing things up by launching a new line of Marketside store brand fresh salsa in seven varieties.

The product is called Marketside Fresh Garden Salsa.

The seven SKU's in the new line are: Mild, Medium and Hot; Chipotle Garlic; Sweet Onion; Mango Peach; and Black Bean & Corn

The salsa comes in 18 oz plastic tubs, as you can see in the photograph at the top. The hot variety is pictured above.

The packaging for the fresh salsa is the same as that of the 10 oz Marketside Mild Pico De Gallo Salsa item in our February 28 report.

Walmart is in the process of rolling out the new Marketside fresh salsa line to selected Supercenters and Neighborhood Market supermarkets in the U.S. We've been told the line also could be sold in Walmart's discount format stores.

The 18 oz Marketside Fresh Garden Salsa line - like its cousin the 10 oz Pico De Gallo, which in the full line comes in medium and hot varieties in addition to the mild - is targeted to be merchandised in the refrigerated sections in the produce departments in Walmart stores. We suspect it might find its way to the self-serve refrigerated deli sections in some stores as well.

The unit price point for the new Marketside 18 oz Fresh Garden Salsa is about $2.99, depending on the region where a store is in the U.S.

Walmart has posted the new Marketside value-added, packaged fresh produce line (plus the Pico De Gallo Salsa) and the Marketside family-sized entrees from our February 28 story on its fairly recently revamped http://www.marketside.com/ Web site.

However, as of today, the new Marketside Garden Fresh Salsa line - or the ready-to-heat soup line we reported on also on February 28 - isn't included or depicted on the marketside.com site.
